Transdifferentiation of protoxylem tracheary elements in Arabidopsis cotyledon cells

This maximum projection image from a living Arabidopsis seedling was obtained using a spinning disk confocal microscope. Deposition of secondary cell walls followed by programmed cell death in cotyledon epidermal cells is achieved by the ectopic activation of a master transcriptional regulator for tracheary element cell fate. Secondary cell walls are shown shown in red and the plasma membranes of living cells is shown in green by imaging a plasma membrane protein fused to green fluorescent protein.
